How Does Online Yoga Teacher Training Work?

What Is Online Yoga Teacher Training?

Online yoga teacher training lets you complete a recognised teacher training course without travelling to a physical location, studying through a mix of recorded lessons, live sessions, and self-directed practice instead of attending an in-person program.

How Bhakti Yogshala’s Online Training Is Structured

Our 200-hour online yoga teacher training course combines pre-recorded lessons with live interactive sessions, so you can study at your own pace while still getting direct access to a teacher. Course content follows the same curriculum as our in-person 200-hour programs — covering asana, pranayama, philosophy, anatomy, and teaching methodology.

Live Classes vs Recorded Learning

Our online courses are not purely self-study. The 200-hour online program includes both recorded modules you can revisit at any time, and live sessions where a teacher works with students directly and answers questions in real time.

Teacher Interaction and Support

Beyond the live sessions, students get access to a private group where teachers share additional guidance, and can ask questions as they progress through the material.

Assessments and Coursework

Completion typically involves a theory examination and a practical anatomy presentation, alongside the study guide and written materials provided as part of the course.

Certification and Completion

On completing the 200-hour online course, students receive a Yoga Alliance-accredited certification, the same as our in-person training, which allows you to register as a teacher and teach internationally. Most students complete the course within a few months, though exact pace varies since the format is self-paced with lifetime access to the material.

Who Is Online Yoga Teacher Training Suitable For?

No prior yoga teaching experience is required. The format suits both complete beginners and experienced practitioners looking to formalise their knowledge, particularly if travelling to an in-person course isn’t practical for you right now.

Online vs In-Person Yoga Teacher Training

The core difference is flexibility versus immersion. In-person training means dedicating a fixed block of time to an intensive, fully immersive environment, while online training lets you fit the coursework around existing work or family commitments. If you’re unsure which suits you better, our guide to choosing the right yoga teacher training covers this in more depth.

Questions to Ask Before Choosing an Online YTT

  • Does the course include live interaction with a real teacher, or is it purely pre-recorded?
  • Is the certification recognised by Yoga Alliance or an equivalent body?
  • How is the practical/teaching component assessed, given you’re not training in person?
  • How much time per week does the course realistically require?
